Why are microplastics a problem?

Microplastics are so small that they can be difficult to see with the naked eye and can easily leach from the bath into the sewer system. Most sewage treatment plants are unable to filter them, leading to them becoming part of the "plastic soup" that forms in the oceans. Here they become part of the marine life and thus become part of the food chain. Since humans are at the top of this chain, it is very likely that microplastics will reach us through this route. Microplastics are not biodegradable and once they enter the (marine) ecosystem, they are almost impossible to remove.
