CPK
With the growing interest in environmental issues, a new Czech eco-label called CPK (Certified Natural Cosmetics), which is based on the regulations of the French company Ecocert, is appearing on the domestic market. This certificate declares that there are no synthetic or harmful chemicals in cosmetic products.
Although there are no officially prescribed guidelines defining what can be labelled as "natural cosmetics" or "organic cosmetics" in the Czech Republic (unlike food regulation), the manufacturer can determine which products will be labelled in this way. This can lead to misleading labelling of products that put on the mantle of nature even though they are full of petroleum derivatives and synthetic ingredients.
The CPK label, established in 2007, aims to help consumers navigate the cosmetics market, promote health and protect the environment. Any manufacturer can apply for this certification and, as long as their product meets the standards, can display the CPK logo on their packaging as a guarantee of the authenticity of the natural ingredients.
The CPK certificate is provided by KEZ - Control of Organic Agriculture o.p.s., which is an independent control body that also oversees organic farming. One of the main requirements for obtaining the certificate is the exclusive use of natural raw materials that are obtained in a way that minimises the impact on the environment.
The cosmetic product must not contain harmful or synthetic substances. The use of GMOs, petroleum derivatives, chemical preservatives, artificial colours, chemical UV filters and materials obtained by killing an animal are prohibited (exceptions are made for lanolin, honey or milk, which do not require the death of an animal). Testing of cosmetics on animals is also prohibited.
Like most other certifiers, CPK focuses not only on the composition of cosmetics, but also on how they are manufactured and their packaging materials. The emphasis is on packaging that can be recycled and is environmentally friendly.
