UEBT
The UEBT label confirms that the raw materials have been sourced in accordance with ethical principles. Companies that hold the label are committed to protecting biodiversity in the growing, harvesting and further processing of raw materials. They also commit to paying fair wages and treating all members of the supply chain with respect.
The UEBT label is awarded by the non-profit Union for Ethical Organic Trade, which monitors and supports the commitments of companies that have signed up to ethical sourcing. UEBT defines globally accepted principles for ethical sourcing. The Union was established as a United Nations expert organisation under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the rules set by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
The UEBT label confirms compliance with ethical principles in the sourcing of raw materials and is transferable to all practices related to the sourcing of natural cosmetics.
The UEBT guidelines set out 7 main criteria that need to be met by companies obtaining the label:
- protection of biodiversity
- Sustainable use of biodiversity
- Tracing the origin of natural ingredients
- Compliance with national and international laws
- Fair working conditions and food security for individuals involved in local sourcing
- Transparency of information regarding land ownership and rights to use and access natural resources
