Ecocert

Ecocert is an independent global institution specialising in the inspection and certification of products containing ingredients from monitored organic farming. It is currently one of the leading certification companies for products in many sectors, including organic cosmetics.

Founded in 1991, Ecocert of France is now one of the largest global certifiers of natural and organic products. It operates in more than 80 countries and in France alone it traces more than 70% of organic product producers.

Each product must contain a minimum of 95% natural ingredients. Products certified by this company must also meet specifications regarding their production, starting with the cultivation and sourcing of raw materials. They must be natural, a certain proportion of which must come from controlled organic farming, and checks are also made on storage, hygiene conditions during processing, organic production practices, recyclability of packaging and the legibility of labels for consumers.

Ecocert labelled products must not contain genetically modified raw materials, parabens, phenoxyethanol, nanoparticles, silicones, PEG derivatives, synthetic perfumes and dyes and products derived from dead animals.

Depending on the amount of organic quality raw materials used, two types of certification are granted:

1. Ecocert organic cosmetics - must meet the following requirements:

   • at least 95 % of all ingredients of natural origin,
   • at least 95 % of all ingredients of plant origin,
   • at least 10 % of all ingredients by weight must come from organic farming.

2. Ecocert Natural Cosmetics - must meet the following requirements:

   • at least 95 % of all ingredients of natural origin,
   • at least 50 % of all ingredients of plant origin,
   • at least 5 % of all ingredients by weight must come from organic farming.
