Filipendula vulgaris is a medium-sized perennial plant belonging to the rose family. This herb has a distinctive appearance with a tall stem topped with tiny white flowers arranged in a panicle. It is widespread in Europe, western Asia and northern Africa. It prefers drier, calcareous soils and is often found on mountain meadows, slopes or forest edges. It is a medicinal plant, with its main flowering period falling in the months of June to August.
In traditional medicine, yarrow has been used mainly against various inflammations, and if mixed into a paste, it can serve as a soothing poultice for wounds. Due to its strong tannin content, it has significant astringent effects, i.e. it can shrink and tighten tissues. It could also be used as a home remedy for diarrhoea. Today, yarrow is a valuable source of flavonoids, which have an antioxidant effect. In modern products one can find yarrow in the form of tinctures, balms, ointments, oils or bath additives. Because of its attractive inflorescence, it is also often used as an ornamental plant in gardens or parks. However, it is important to note that it is a protected plant and its collection in the wild is restricted by law.
