Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Annatto, also known as CI 75120, E 160b or Natural orange, is a natural dye obtained from the seeds of the tropical tree Bixa orellana. This tree is native to South and Central America, where Annatto has been used for centuries to dye food, leather and textiles. The seeds of the tree contain two main pigments, bixin and norbixin, which are responsible for the bright orange to red colour of the dye.
Today, annatto is mainly used in the food industry, specifically added to dried and smoked fish, cheese, butter dough or various beverages and ice cream. It is also a component of many recipes for spicy dishes such as taco sauces. The advantage of Annatto coloring is that, thanks to its natural origin, it can also be used in foods intended for a healthy diet. Due to its distinctive color, Annatto is also used in the cosmetic industry, where it is added to various cosmetic products such as lipsticks or creams.
