Baking soda certainly needs no special introduction—you probably know it as a component of baking powder or as a remedy for heartburn. But did you know that this soda (WARNING – DO NOT CONFUSE WITH WASHING SODA, they are different substances!) also has many uses in eco-friendly household care?

It can be used as an all-purpose cleaner and odor absorber. The crystalline structure of soda acts as a gentle abrasive (without the risk of scratching surfaces), and its mild alkalinity helps dissolve grease acids found in kitchen dirt. You can even use it to extinguish small household fires.

Baking soda decomposes by heat into sodium carbonate, water, and carbon dioxide, making it extremely environmentally and health-friendly. It was first produced in 1791 by French chemist Nicolas Leblanc for bakeries.
