Biological degradation

Soap loses its surface tension reducing properties (primary degradation) immediately after use, in an immediate reaction with the calcium contained in the waste water. The calcium soap is then 100 % decomposed into carbon dioxide and water (secondary degradation). It is therefore easy for micro-organisms to break it down completely.
