Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Pyroctone Olamine, also known as Octopirox or 1-hydroxy-4-methyl-6-(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)pyridin-2-one, is commonly used in the cosmetics industry. It is an active ingredient with broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, mainly against yeasts and moulds. In addition, it has the ability to act as a preservative. This makes it a standard ingredient in a range of hair care products, where it helps to combat lupus and over time, establishes the optimal microbial balance of the scalp.
Piroctone Olamine can be found in shampoos, conditioners, hair rinses or scalp care products. However, it also finds its application outside of hair care. It can appear in skin creams, soaps, shower gels or deodorants. Here, too, it primarily acts as an antifungal agent, helping to combat acne and other problems associated with an overgrowth of microorganisms on the skin. As a preservative, it prolongs the life of cosmetic products. Piroctone Olamine is popular for its mild nature, it does not irritate the skin and is considered safe even for sensitive skin and for use in products for children.
