Protium copal, also known as copal tree or copal, is an evergreen tropical tree native to and thriving in the Costa Rican rainforest. However, its range extends as far as Brazil. It is also found in Africa. This species of tree is an important source of a resin called copal, which can be observed when the bark of the tree is damaged.
Copal resin plays an important role as an ingredient in many products. It is mainly used in the perfume industry for the production of scented sticks, which are used as air fresheners in homes and temples. It is also used in the paint industry as a raw material for the production of certain types of varnish. It has applications in medicine where it is used as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent. Copal has also been used in art, specifically in a painting technique called encaustic, which is a hot wax painting technique. It has an interesting scent and is also a powerful insect repellent.
