Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
Polysorbate 21, also known as Polyoxyethylene-20-Sorbitan Monolaurate, Sorbitan monolaurate ethoxylated or PEG-10 Sorbitan Laurate, is an emulsifier that has a wide range of applications, especially in the cosmetics industry. Thanks to its properties, it improves the consistency and stability of products.
Polysorbate 21 can be found, for example, in shampoos, creams, skin cleansers and other cosmetic products, but it is also used to improve the absorption of active ingredients in pharmaceutical preparations. However, there is a risk of skin irritation when using it, so it is advisable to pay attention to its concentration in products and to monitor how our body reacts to it. On the positive side, however, is its biodegradability. Its widespread use in the cosmetics industry is due to its ability to help even out the texture of the product and stabilise it, which contributes to making these products more pleasant to use. Like all emulsifiers, polysorbate 21 is able to combine ingredients that do not normally mix, such as water and oil. This makes it an indispensable aid in the manufacture of many cosmetic products.
