Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The myrobalan plum, also known as the cherry plum or cherry plum, is a tree native to southwest Asia and southeast Europe. It is one of the first plants to flower in spring. It is a medium-sized tree that reaches a height of 6-15 metres. The leaves are smooth, round or oval, with a toothed edge. The flowers are simple, white or pink. The fruits of the myrobalan plum tree are shaped like small plums and can be yellow, green, red or purple.
Myrobalan plums are eaten both fresh and processed. They have a sweet and sour taste reminiscent of cherries and plums. They are mainly used to make marmalades, jams, syrups, juices, wines and liqueurs. The fruit can also be used to make jam, preserves or compotes. Traditionally, in Eastern Europe, the fruit of the myrobalan is used to make an alcoholic drink called slivovitz. The wood of the myrobalan is also valuable. It is hard, heavy and durable, and is mainly used in carving, furniture and musical instruments. The myrobalan plum is also popular as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens for its beautiful spring blossom.
