Plankton
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Plankton, also known as Ox bile or buffalo bile, is not, as its name would suggest, a marine organism. It is indeed a raw material of non-living origin, specifically bile extracted from bulls or oxen. This product has applications in many sectors, such as the pharmaceutical industry, food production or cosmetics, where its ability to dissolve fats is exploited.
In cosmetics, buffalo bile is used in skin care products, especially for oily skin with acne. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to make medicines to aid digestion and gallbladder function. In addition, Ox bile is also used in food production where it serves as an emulsifier. This means that it helps to bring together water and fat, which would normally reject each other. As a result, it contributes significantly to the consistency and stability of foods. For example, it is used in the production of ice cream, mayonnaise or various sauces. In conclusion, although it is a product of animal origin, the production and use of Ox bile complies with EU regulations and standards on safety and hygiene.
