Other names: 3-benzyl-1,5-dihydropyrazol-4-one, Edaravon
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Phenyl Methyl Pyrazolone, other names for it are Edaravone or 3-benzyl-1,5-dihydropyrazol-4-one, is an organic compound used primarily in the medical sphere. It belongs to a class of drugs known as neuroprotective agents, which play a key role in protecting the nervous system against various forms of damage. This substance has an excellent ability to scavenge free radicals and thus limit further damage caused by oxidative stress.
Phenyl Methyl Pyrazolone is the main ingredient of Radicut, which was developed and approved in Japan for the treatment of patients affected by ischemic stroke. Clinical studies suggest that the use of this drug may help improve neurological symptoms and improve patients' mobility. Additionally, this drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a serious neurodegenerative disease. Edaravone thus becomes one of the few approved therapies for this disease. Remarkably, the substance can also be used in the cosmetics industry, where it is added to skin care products as an antioxidant.
