Palmaria palmata, also known as Dulse, Dillisk, creathnach, or Rhodymenia palmata, is an edible red algae commonly found in the North Atlantic. Its popularity is due not only to its characteristic taste, which is reminiscent of a combination of seafood and almonds, but also to the many minerals and vitamins it contains. This seaweed is a staple food in parts of Northern Ireland, Iceland and the east coast of Canada.
Dulse is used in a wide range of food products. It is included in some breads, rice dishes, salads, soups and sauces, side dishes and drinks. It is also used as a seasoning for flavouring fish and seafood. In recent years it has become a popular ingredient in vegetarian and vegan dishes due to its distinctive flavour and high protein content. Dulse snack, prepared in a similar way to potato chips, is a popular dish in Iceland. In addition, Dulse is also used in the cosmetics industry to make face masks, creams and other skin and hair care products. Its antibacterial properties and vitamin C content are ideal for skin regeneration.
