Nannochloropsis Oculata
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Nannochloropsis oculata is a species of unicellular microalgae that is considered one of the most important bivalves for food and medicine. These microfibrils are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids and a host of other vitamins and minerals, giving them strong health potential. Due to their nutritional value and high resistance to harmful conditions, they are one of the main ingredients in aquarium and commercial fish feed.
Sodium benzoate, or E211, is another name for Nannochloropsis oculata, but is used in other contexts. Sodium benzoate is not used as a name for this algae, but as a name for a specific chemical known as a preservative. This substance is added to many foods and beverages to prevent the growth of bacteria and mould and thus prolong their shelf life. It can be found, for example, in fruit juices, sodas, ketchup and other food products. It is important to note that although Nannochloropsis oculata and sodium benzoate have the same alternative names, they are not the same substances and each has its own specific use.
