Minor velvetleaf (Tagetes minuta)

Other names: Tagetes minuta, african, marigold

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

The lesser velvetleaf, known in Latin as Tagetes minuta, is also known as the African or marigold. It is a perennial herb native to South America, characterised by its single or double pinnate leaves and very small flowers. These flowers form in large numbers and are arranged in compound perianths. The plant reaches a height of up to 2 metres and is very drought tolerant. Velvetleaf minuta is particularly popular for its characteristic strong aroma.

Due to its strong scent and aromatic properties, the velvetleaf minuta is often used in perfumery and cosmetics. Its extracts can be found in various products such as perfumes, body lotions, shampoos and soaps. In addition, the lesser velvet tree is also used in the food industry - especially as a flavouring agent for certain dishes. Interestingly, in the past, this species has been used as an insecticide. Its strong scent can repel pests. Despite its versatile use, however, it should be added that the lesser velvetleaf is not very widespread in the Czech Republic and its cultivation is concentrated in warmer areas.
