Methyl Nicotinate
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Methyl Nicotinate, which is also known by the names Propylene Glycol Methyl Ether Acetate or PGMEA, is an organic compound used in many industrial and cosmetic products. It is a colourless to slightly yellowish liquid with a characteristic aroma.
Methyl Nicotinate is mainly found in some skin care products such as skin creams, toners, but also in a product called "Ceramide Cream". This substance is popular in cosmetics due to its vasodilating effects - it dilates blood vessels and thus improves blood circulation in the skin. Outside the cosmetics industry, Methyl Nicotinate is also used as an ingredient in various paints and varnishes, in cleaning products and is also a component of some pesticides. It is also used in corrosion protection components.
However, pure Methyl Nicotinate is also poisonous and precautions must be taken when handling it, it is dangerous if swallowed, touched on the skin and also if inhaled. High concentrations of this chemical can cause skin or eye irritation. As it is a flammable substance, it should also be handled with care to prevent fire safety. Safety and health must always come first, even though chemistry offers us many benefits and useful properties.
