Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Manganese sulfate, otherwise known as manganese sulfate or manganese rock, is a chemical compound. Its chemical formula is MnSO4. It is a white to pink crystalline substance that is highly soluble in water. It occurs in two forms - anhydrous and monohydrate. The monohydrate, MnSO4.H2O, is a light pink crystalline substance that occurs naturally as the single-clone mineral melloneite. Anhydrous manganese sulfate is used in the ceramic industry for the purpose of kneading porcelain masses and making glass.
Manganese sulphate has a wide range of uses in various industries. Although its main area of application is in agriculture, where it is used as a mineral supplement in livestock and plant nutrition, it is also found in many other products. It is an important excipient in the manufacture of dyes, inks, glitter and fish feed. In medicine it is used as a mineral supplement for the treatment of certain types of anaemia. It is also a component of smelters in metallurgy or is used to remove sulphur from iron. It has interesting uses in the textile industry, where it is used to increase the colour and durability of materials. Due to its chemical properties, it is also a component of batteries and accumulators.
