Lauryl Dimethyl Amine Oxide
Other names: LDAO, N,N-Dimethyldodecane-1-amine N-oxide, dodecyldimethylamine oxide
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Lauryl dimethyl amine oxide, also known as LDAO or N,N-Dimethyldodecane-1-amine N-oxide or dodecyldimethylamine oxide, is one of the substances that form the basis of various cosmetic and cleaning products. It is an amphoteric surfactant (so-called surfactant), which means that it can reduce the surface tension between two substances, for example between oil and water, and thus helps to form and stabilize foam.
LDAO is mainly used in the cosmetics industry, specifically in shampoos, shower gels, body washes and shaving products. Due to its properties, it is also added to some hair products such as conditioners. Its ability to soften, cleanse and stabilize foam makes it an important part of cosmetic production. However, LDAO also finds use in household cleaners such as dishwashing detergents and glass cleaners. It works as an effective grease and dirt remover. Other uses can be found in the textile industry, where laundry soaps are produced.
