Isoamyl p-methoxycinnamate
Other names: Amyloxate, Isopentyl 4-methoxycinnamate
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Isoamyl p-methoxycinnamate, also known as Amiloxate or Isopentyl 4-methoxycinnamate, is an organic compound widely used in the cosmetic industry. This chemical, which combines the isoamyl and methoxycinnamate groups, is an ester of p-methoxycinnamic acid and isoamyl alcohol. It is a colourless or pale yellowish liquid with a characteristic odour, the main criterion for selection in cosmetic products being its UV-absorbing properties.
Due to this specific property, amyloxate is often used as an ingredient in sunscreens and other sun protection products. When applied to the skin, it is able to absorb harmful UV radiation and thus protect the skin cells from its negative effects. Cosmetic manufacturers also often add this ester to various creams, lotions, as well as make-up and hair finishes. In addition, Isoamyl p-methoxycinnamate is also found in some hair care products such as conditioners or hair styling products.
