Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Hypromellose, also known as Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose or food additive E464, is a type of cellulose that is characterized by a high degree of purity and is chemically modified with hydroxypropyl and methyl groups. It is a tasteless and odourless white to creamy white powder that is soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents.
This substance is mainly used in the food industry as a thickener, stabiliser and emulsifier. Due to its properties, it is widely used in the production of bakery products, confectionery, ice cream, but also in some beverages such as instant drinks. Hypromellose is also used in the pharmaceutical industry as a filler and humectant in tablets, capsules and granules. Due to its excellent film-forming properties, it is also used in the manufacture of tablet coatings. In addition, it is also a component of many cosmetic formulations where it acts as a humectant and stabilizer. E464 is considered safe and is an EU approved additive with no set maximum amount.
