Gurjun balsam, also known as Gurjun balsam or Diperocarpus turbinatus, is a widely used essence from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. This balsam is extracted from the bark and wood of the tree by distillation at high temperatures. The resulting product is clear to yellow-brown in colour and has a specific, thick aroma that is often compared to aromatic woods.
Gurjuna balsam has a wide range of applications in various industries. It is included in many products such as perfumes, scented candles and other cosmetic products. Due to its strong, distinctive scent, it is often used as a substitute for expensive sandalwood. In the construction industry, this balsam is used as an additive in paints to increase their resistance to water and mould. In medicine, Gurjun balsam is used in the treatment of various skin diseases, including eczema and psoriasis. Scientists are also investigating its potential anti-carcinogenic effects. Because of its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, this balsam is also used in aromatherapy.
