Cortusa Sibirica, also known as the Circumcision or Siberian cortusa, is native to the Himalayas, China and southern Siberia. This above-ground perennial from the herb family grows up to 30 cm tall and its leaves can reach an astonishing 20 cm. Its flowers form in May and are predominantly dark purple in colour. A characteristic feature of the plant is that its inflorescence can change its position during the day depending on the position of the sun. The plant prefers a shady and humid environment and is very resistant to low temperatures.
Cortusa Sibirica is used mainly in traditional medical practices in East Asia. It is known to contain bitter substances and glycosides that are used in medicine. This plant is also suitable for making teas, which are consumed for their supposedly strengthening and tonic effects. Due to its attractive appearance, the cortusa is also used in ornamental horticulture as a plant suitable for shade, rockery or reforestation. It is also important for beekeeping as its flowers are a rich source of nectar. The Siberian cortus is undoubtedly a plant with a wide range of uses.
