Cellulose derivatives

Cellulose derivatives are substances that are produced by chemically modifying cellulose, the natural polysaccharide component of plant cells. The best known derivatives are carboxymethylcellulose (E466), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and hydroethylcellulose. These substances are characterised by different physical and chemical properties which make them useful in many different industrial applications.

Carboxymethylcellulose (E466), for example, is often used as a food additive to improve the shape, texture, appearance and taste of foods. However, it is also used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose and hydroethyl cellulose also have a wide range of uses. In particular, they can be a component of various cosmetic products, pharmaceuticals, paints, adhesives, plasters, sealants, tablets, capsules or even eye drops. In many cases they serve as stabilizers, thickeners or emulsifiers.
