Cellulose, which is also referred to as pulp, or E464 according to the list of food additives, is a natural polysaccharide that forms the cell walls of plants. Due to its functions and properties, it finds applications in many different industries. It is not only a major component of wood and plant biomass, but also a basic raw material for the production of paper and paperboard products.
In addition, cellulose is widely used in the textile industry, serving as a basis for the production of viscose and cellulose fibres. In the food industry, E464 is used as a stabiliser, emulsifier, thickener, but also as a fat replacer in low-calorie products. It is an important ingredient in the pharmaceutical industry where it is used in the preparation of drugs, particularly as a filler or binder in tablets. It is also used in cosmetics - in shampoos, creams and other body care products. It is environmentally safe, biodegradable and is considered a renewable raw material.
