Caryodendron orinocense is a plant in the Euphorbiaceae family, which is also known by the names Taccy Nut, nogal de Barquisimeto or Orinoconut. This rare and little-known plant is native to South America, where it occurs naturally in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. Caryodendron orinocense is a tree that can grow up to 50 metres tall. It has large, oval leaves and produces fruit capsules containing large, globular seeds.
The seeds of Caryodendron orinocense are very nutritious and contain a high proportion of oil and protein. Because of its oil content, it is an important raw material in the cosmetics industry, where it is used to make various creams, oils and soaps. Because of their protein content, the seeds are also used in the food industry, especially as an ingredient in various nutritional supplements or healthy diets. The wood from this tree is also commercially exploitable. It is hard, heavy and durable and is therefore used in joinery and construction. For example, it is used for furniture, parquet, doors and as construction timber.
