Butylhydroxyanisole (BHA), which is also commonly known as Butylated Hydroxyanisole, Butylated Hydroxyanisole, BHA, E 320, Antioxine B, Embanox, Nipantiox1-F, Protex, Sustane 1-F, Tenox BHA, is an organic compound highly used in the food and cosmetic industry as a preservative. It is therefore a chemical antioxidant, its main function is to prevent changes in colour, taste and smell caused by oxidation. Without the use of preservatives, many products would spoil quickly.
BHA is added to a variety of foods and beverages, such as meat and meat products, cereals, yeast products, dried dairy products, fruit drinks, and various types of fats and oils. In the cosmetic industry, it is used in creams, mascara, make-up, various types of oils and fats, soaps and shampoos. BHA is also used in medicinal products such as ointments and creams for fragrance and preservation. It is important to note that although BHA is widely used and generally considered safe, it may cause allergic reactions or other side effects in some people. There are even studies that show a potential risk of BHA carcinogenicity if consumed in excessive amounts.
