Benzyl acetate is also referred to by the names Benzyl Acetate, Methyl Phenylacetate or Methyl alpha-Toluate, which is its chemical name. It is a transparent liquid with a characteristic fruity scent that resembles jasmine. It is derived from resins and ethers, but is also produced artificially. Benzyl acetate in ester form is not only extremely aromatic but also synthetic. However, in its pure form it is very strong and so is not used in its 100% concentration, but is diluted into a form that can be safely used in food and cosmetics.
Benzyl acetate is widely used in the food and cosmetic industries. Due to its jasmine-like scent, it is mainly used as a fragrance and perfume in cosmetic products such as perfumes, soaps, shampoos, body creams or deodorants. It is safe to say that if you ever inhale a jasmine scent from cosmetics, chances are that it contains benzyl acetate. In the food industry, it is used as a flavouring for certain fruits such as apple, banana, berry, peach, pineapple or strawberry. It is also used in canned foods, candies or chewing gum. The safety of benzyl acetate is strictly monitored and regulated by food and cosmetic regulations.
