Behenyl behenate
Other names: Docosyl docosanoate
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Behenyl Behenate, also known as Docosyl docosanoate, is a synthetic material that is used in the cosmetic industry. It is a white, waxy substance that is primarily used in formulations as a stabilizer and emulsifier. Emulsification is a process that combines water and oil into a homogeneous mixture called an emulsion. In addition, it also improves the consistency of products.
Due to its composition and properties, behenyl behenate finds application in various types of cosmetic products. In the cosmetic industry, it is very often included in make-up and lipstick products, where it serves as a thickener and improves their adhesion and spreadability. In various creams and soaps, this ester serves as an emulsifier and also increases water resistance. Behenyl behenate also strengthens and moisturizes the hair and is therefore included in many shampoos and conditioners. Last but not least, this material can also be found in sheet masks, facial serums, body lotions and other skin and body care products. It is considered safe from a safety point of view and this assessment is confirmed by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
