Behentrimonium Chloride
Other names: Docosyltrimethylammonium chloride, BTAC-228, Docosyltrimethylammonium chloride
Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
Behentrimonium Chloride, also known as Docosyltrimethylammonium chloride, BTAC-228 or Docosyltrimethylammonium chloride, is a substance used in the cosmetic industry mainly for its conditioning properties. It is a type of quaternary ammonium compound, specifically a cationic surfactant, which is often used in hair care products, but also, for example, in soaps or hand creams. Its effect is to help detangle hair, restore and maintain moisture and promote shine.
A significant benefit of Behentrimonium Chloride is its ability to smooth and improve the appearance of hair by making it easier to comb and preventing static electricity. Its other benefit is helping to retain moisture in the hair and contributing to a healthier appearance. Although it is a relatively strong substance, it is considered safe for use in cosmetic products and is approved by both the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The substance has antibacterial and preservative properties, among others, making it a substitute for some other preservatives considered less safe. In some cases, Behentrimonium Chloride can cause skin or eye irritation, and these risks are higher in products with higher concentrations of this substance.
