Aralia cordata, also known as Herb Aralia, Udo or Japanese Spikenard, is an important plant native to Japan, Korea and parts of China. It is known for its health benefits and is often used in traditional Eastern medicine. This perennial plant, which is related to angelica and ginseng, can grow up to three metres tall and is characterised by its heart-shaped, bright green leaves and large, white flowers that appear in late summer.

Aralia cordata is used in a wide range of products. Its young shoots are popular as a crunchy addition to salads or can be prepared as asparagus. In Japan, they are processed during spring into a traditional dish called 'udo no sansho ae', where they are mixed with sesame seeds, soy sauce and lemon. In addition to this, aralia cordata is also used medicinally to make various ointments, teas and tinctures. Special preparations are used to treat colds, headaches or joint pain and to boost immunity. The plant is also used in cosmetics, for example to make creams and face masks that are supposed to have regenerative effects. So not only is the Aralia cordata a beautiful plant to look at, but it also brings many benefits to our health and overall well-being.
