Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
1-Naphthol, otherwise known as 1-naphthol or α-naphthol, is an organic compound of the phenol group with the chemical formula C10H7OH.1-Naphthol is a white solid that is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves well in polar organic solvents. It is one of the two isomeric naphthols, the other being 2-naphthol. It is a relatively rare substance in nature and is commonly available synthetically.
1-Naphthol is used in a large number of industrial applications. It is an important precursor for the production of many dyes, including azo dyes. Its main uses include the manufacture of industrial pesticides, where the derivatives produced are used as insecticides, but this practice is currently being restricted due to environmental implications. 1-Naphthol is also used as a precursor for the synthesis of a variety of pharmaceutical products, where it is used as an intermediate. By virtue of its structure and reactive nature, 1-Naphthol is an essential raw material for the production of a number of important industrial chemicals.
