The ingredients and production process of Aleppo soap have remained unchanged for centuries. Olive and laurel oil, water, and sodium hydroxide are first boiled in large cauldrons, then the dark green soap solution is poured onto the floor of a drying chamber and left to solidify. It is then hand-cut into neat cubes and air-dried for six to nine months.

In Syria, this gently foaming soap is also used in traditional baths, whose tradition was established by the Romans when this area became their province. Crusaders brought knowledge of Aleppo soap production to Europe, where it soon began to be exported. In France, they developed the well-known Marseille soap based on it. But only the original ingredients and processing method give Aleppo soap its unique softening effects.
