Yam daisy, scientific name Dioscorea hypoglauca, is an evergreen, perennial plant belonging to the family Dioscoreaceae. In Chinese medicine, it is often referred to by the name Bei Xie. This clematis-like herb has the unique characteristic of its rhizomes growing deep in the ground, which are widely used in medicine for their healing effects. This plant is native to the environment of Northeast India and Southwest China, where it has been cultivated for its medicinal properties for centuries.
Dioscorea hypoglauca is mainly known for its versatility in medicine. It is best known for the presence of diosgenin, a steroidal saponin that behaves similarly to estrogen and progesterone in the body. This substance is used by experts to produce hormonal drugs such as contraceptives or menopause medications. In addition, medicines for rheumatism, joint and muscle pain are prepared from Bei Xie rhizomes. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties - extracts of yam may therefore also appear in medicine as part of the treatment of infections. Besides, this plant is also used in dietary products as the rhizomes are rich in fiber and starch, while containing minimal amounts of fat. Some sources also mention the use of Bei Xie in cosmetics, where it is used for its antioxidant content.
