Other names: ladel's lace, Indian piñon, granatilli, grana tiglii, semina crotonis, grana molucca
Xanthophylls, also known by the names ladel clear, Indian piñon, granatilli, grana tiglii, semina crotonis, grana molucca, belong to the carotenoid family. Carotenoids are a group of natural pigments found in many plants, including green leaves and flowers, where they form an important component of photosystems. Carotenoids and xanthophylls are responsible for the yellow and orange colours of many fruits and vegetables. Xanthophylls contain two types of pigments, lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for eye health.
Xanthophylls are commonly used in the food industry as natural dyes. Their bright yellow to orange color is ideal for use in products such as juices, fruit drinks, candies, ice cream or smoothies. Because of their potential health benefits, they are also added to dietary supplements. In cosmetics, they can be used for their antioxidant properties and ability to protect the skin from the harmful effects of sunlight. In agriculture, they are used as an ingredient in poultry feed because of their ability to improve the colour of egg yolk.
