Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
Wisteria, sometimes called wisteria, wisteria, wistaria or blue rain, is one of the very popular lianas in our gardens. This ornamental shrub is native to East Asia and North America. It is known for its long inflorescences full of gorgeous blue, white, pink or purple flowers that hang down in groups to create a blue or purple rain effect. Its characteristic scent, which can be likened to a fine perfume, has also helped to increase interest in wisteria. However, it is primarily valued for its aesthetic qualities, which often make it a popular choice in horticulture.
The uses of wisteria are wide-ranging. Its flowers are used in perfumery, where they form the basis for various perfumes. Another use is in the manufacture of cosmetic products, where the powerful antioxidant effect of wisteria is exploited. Some cultivars of wisteria are edible and are used in oriental cuisine as part of some dishes, especially in Japan and China. Traditional Chinese medicine also uses its therapeutic effects, especially for its detoxifying effects and promoting liver health. Wisteria is also used as an ornament or as part of living garden walls. It is also used in floristry, where it is used to make bouquets and floral arrangements.
