Winter horsetail (Equisetum hyemale)

The winter horsetail, also known as the winter horsetail, the overwintering horsetail or simply the winter horsetail, is a species of plant in the genus Equisetum. The scientific names of this plant are Equisetum hyemale, Hippochaete hyemale or Equisetum hiemale. This plant is particularly known for its frost resistance, which allows it to survive even in extremely cold conditions. In the Czech Republic, the identity of this plant is debatable, and it is sometimes referred to as a synonym of horsetail (Equisetum ramosissimum). In Chinese, winter horsetail is referred to as Mu Zei.

Winter horsetail has a wide range of uses in different areas. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a component of some medicines and dietary supplements due to its medicinal effects, for example for the treatment of varicose veins and hemorrhoids. In the cosmetic industry, extracts from this plant are used in skin creams, tonics and other skin care products. It is valued for its astringent and tonic properties. Furthermore, winter horsetail is used in the food industry as an ingredient in some tea blends. It is also used in the construction industry to make natural insulation. In the Middle Ages, the plant was used to clean metal objects, and today its fine roughening is used, for example, by violin makers for finishing instruments. Among other things, it is also used as a decorative plant in horticulture. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine.
