Other names: Witch hazel
Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)
The Virginia elm (Hamamelis virginiana), also known by the musical-sounding name Witch hazel, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America. With its medicinal properties and striking bright yellow flowers that appear in late autumn to winter, this plant has become a favourite not only among gardeners but also in the cosmetic industry. The Virginia creeper can grow up to 6 metres tall and its petals are typically lance-shaped and deep green in colour.
Hair and skin products are the main uses of the Virginia creeper. The extract of this plant is popular for its properties that help prevent redness and irritation of sensitive soil and also have astringent properties, which means they can tighten skin and pores. Because of these abilities, Virginia creeper is often found in acne-fighting products, facial toners, or aftershaves. Hair products with Virginia wool extract promise to strengthen the crown of the hair and restore hydration to the hair fiber, preventing breakage. It is also included in many toothpastes as it helps to reduce swelling and gum pain. But Virginia wool is also used in medicine, where its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties are used.
