Nardus, or also nardus jataman, spikenard, Indian valerian, or Himalayan valerian, is an herb native to the mountainous regions of the Himalayas in India, Nepal and China. It is a species of plant in the heath family and reaches a height of about one metre. It has dark green leaves and stems with small pink or blue flowers. The plant is especially known for its aromatic stony rhizomes, which are used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
The uses of the nardus are really wide. Its main constituents, called sesquiterpenes, are mostly used in perfumery and aromatherapy. The essential oil obtained from the dried rhizomes has a strong earthy scent and is often used in body oils, lotions, scented candles and relaxation products. In traditional Indian medicine, nard is used as a remedy for insomnia, stress or anxiety due to its calming effects. It is also sometimes called a natural sedative. It is also important in the food industry, where it is used as a spice or natural preservative. In addition, nard is used in some religious ceremonies and rituals for its strong and characteristic scent. It is therefore not only a valuable medicinal plant, but also an important part of cultural and spiritual tradition.
