Trisodium phosphate
Other names: E339, Trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
Trisodium phosphate, also referred to as E339, is a chemical that is a white crystalline powder in its pure form. Another name for this substance is trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate. It is a salt of sodium and phosphoric acid that is strongly alkaline in nature. Since trisodium phosphate is highly soluble in water, it is often used as a cleaning agent, rubberizing agent or corrosion inhibitor.
Trisodium phosphate E339 is widely used not only in industry but also in the food industry. It is used, for example, in the production of milk, cheese, ice cream, bakery products, sausages, rehydratable foods, soups and sauces as a stabiliser, emulsifier and acidity regulator. This is mainly due to its ability to affect pH and bind water, which is often necessary in the food industry. However, E339 is also found in various cleaning and chemical products. In industry, for example, trisodium phosphate is widely used as a component of detergents and cleaning agents, or as an additive in paints.
