Tridecane
Other names: Tridecane
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Tridecane, also known as tridecane, is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with the formula CH3(CH2)11CH3. It is a colorless liquid that is often present in petroleum and natural gas. Its evaporation temperature is relatively high (196 °C), which means that it is less likely to evaporate into the atmosphere than many other hydrocarbons. It is soluble in many organic solvents but almost insoluble in water.
Tridecane is used in many industrial applications. As an ingredient in many manufacturing processes, it is used primarily in perfumery, where it serves as a base ingredient for the production of various forms of perfume. It is also found in some types of plastics and resins and is often a component of compounds for the manufacture of lubricants. It is also used as a solvent in industrial cleaning products or as an additive in a number of other products, including paints and cosmetics. However, tridecane is also considered to be a potentially harmful substance and its handling and use must be carried out with due care.
