Monkeyflower (Mimulus), also known by its English name Monkeyflower, is a genus of plants in the family Phrymaceae. This genus includes about 150 species of annual and biennial herbs and perennials native to North America, Australia and Asia. The name "kejklířka", by which this plant is usually referred to in Czech botany, is derived from the Latin word "mimus", which means comedian, kejklíř, i.e. someone who imitates. This name has its origin in the characteristic, distinctive shape of the flowers of these plants, which resemble the mask of a jester or monkey, hence the English name Monkeyflower.
Monkeyflower is widely used in horticulture to decorate garden tanks, rockeries, but also as a balcony plant. Its flowers stand out in a wide range of colours, from pure white to deep red, and are a variety of food for many insects. Besides, this plant is also commonly used in homeopathy and alternative medicine. In particular, the spotted knapweed (Mimulus guttatus) is included in Bach flower essences, where it is used to treat fear and worry. In cosmetics, it is used for its astringent properties, for example in lotions or moisturizing creams.
