Other names: β-D-fructofuranosyl, Sucrose octabenzoate, Sucrose benzoate
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Sucrose Benzoate, or also known as β-D-fructofuranosyl, Sucrose octabenzoate, or Sucrose Benzoate, is a chemical substance belonging to the class of esters, which is characterized by its stability, non-toxicity and decent solubility in water and other polar solvents. It is a colourless and odourless substance which appears most commonly in the form of a crystalline powder. Due to its exceptional stability, Sucrose Benzoate is used in many industrial sectors as an additive, especially in the cosmetics and food industries.
In cosmetics, Sucrose Benzoate is primarily used as an emulsifier, meaning that it helps to bind ingredients that would not normally bind together, such as oil and water. This property is highly valued in cosmetics because it allows the production of stable and homogeneous products such as creams, lotions, shampoos, as well as decorative cosmetics. It is also used as a stabilizer in the production of beverages and foods, as it improves their consistency, aroma and taste. Sucrose Benzoate is currently approved as a safe additive by the European Food Safety Authority EFSA and the US Food and Drug Administration FDA.
