Stevioside, also known as Iris Sibirica Root Extract, is a natural zero-calorie sweetener that is extracted from the Stevia rebaudiana plant. However, this plant is also known as Siberian Iris. Stevioside is up to 300 times sweeter than sugar and has gained its popularity mainly due to the fact that it does not raise blood sugar levels. It is ideal for people suffering from diabetes or for those trying to lose weight. Moreover, unlike other artificial sweeteners, its consumption is not associated with any health risks.
Stevioside is mainly used in the food industry, where it replaces traditional sugar in many sweet products. Its use is very wide and it is included in the recipe of many confectionery, jams, fruit drinks, candies, yoghurt, chewing gum and even some types of alcohol. Its small volume and high sweetening power also make it suitable for products where it plays a role in compactness and weight reduction, such as some energy bars. Stevioside is also increasingly used in the cosmetics industry, particularly in skin creams and mouthwashes. Its antibacterial properties help to protect teeth from decay and promote oral health.
