Sweet stevia, also known as Stevia rebaudiana, is a plant native to Paraguay and Brazil. It is known for its unique properties, especially its unusually strong sweetness. Stevia is a plant that can produce sweeteners up to 300 times sweeter than regular sugar, yet it contains virtually zero calories. Because of its natural sweetness, stevia is a popular ingredient in many diet and diabetic products.
In its pure form, stevia is used as a sugar substitute, most commonly in the form of sweet tablets or powder. Its neutral taste makes stevia an ideal ingredient for sweetening hot drinks such as tea or coffee. It is also a popular sweetener in various diet drinks and yoghurts. Stevia rebaudiana is also a common ingredient in various diet foods such as low-calorie bars, protein drinks, sweets and chocolate. Although stevia doesn't have as strong a sweetness as artificial sweeteners, its taste is much more natural and pleasant. Because of its unique properties, stevia has become a popular alternative to regular sugar and other artificial sweeteners.
