Squalene/Squalane
Other names: Skvalen, Shark Liver Oil
Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Squalene, or also Shark Liver Oil, is a substance used in the cosmetic industry. However, not everyone knows that squalene has its applications not only in the field of cosmetics. This volatile, colourless liquid is also used in the pharmaceutical industry or in food production. The term 'shark liver oil' refers directly to one of the places from which squalene can be obtained.
Cosmetic products containing squalene are widely used, especially for their moisturising effects. Squalene is a component of human sebum, where it naturally promotes skin hydration. It is therefore a component of many creams, serums or face masks. In the food industry, squalene is a component of some types of margarines and other fatty foods. In the pharmaceutical field, squalene is used for its immunomodulatory effects, where it helps in the treatment of certain skin diseases and eczema. However, it should be mentioned that squalene can be obtained not only from shark liver but also from vegetable sources such as olive oil or amaranth oil.
