Primula veris is a well-known medicinal plant from our meadows and forests, popular for its bright yellow flowers and pleasant scent. It can be found in various parts of the world under names such as Petrel, White Buckthorn, St. Peter's Herb, Cowslip, Oxslip, Primula odorosa or Primavera. This low, spiky perennial grows to a height of 10 to 30 cm. The light green leaves are hairy on both sides and form a ground rosette. The flowers on long peduncles are pale yellow with five toothed tips and form a corolla. It flowers from April to June.
Spring primrose is very useful in herbal medicine. It is known for its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, thus helping with coughs and respiratory problems. It is a source of saponins, flavonoids, carotenoids (which are converted to vitamin A) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). It is used not only in herbal medicine but also in cosmetics. Various creams, ointments and shampoos are made using its medicinal properties. It is also popular in the kitchen - the flowers are used to make refreshing drinks, syrups and even wine. Its leaves and flowers can also be added to salads or used as decoration for cakes and other confectionery.
