Sphagnum Magellanicum
Sphagnum Magellanicum is a species of peat moss that is commonly known as Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, Octyl methoxycinnamate, OMC or Octinoxate. It is a plant constituent that is naturally resistant to UV radiation and is therefore used primarily in the cosmetic industry. It is mainly distributed in the south of Chile and Argentina. Sphagnum Magellanicum is highly valued especially for its ability to absorb water, which is many times higher than the weight of the peat itself.
One specific application of Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate is its use in skin care products such as sunscreens, make-up, lip balms and day creams. Thanks to its ability to absorb UVB radiation, it protects the skin from sun damage. It is also used in conventional cosmetics for daily use because it helps protect the skin against premature aging. In addition, OMC is also used in the manufacture of plastics where it serves as an additive to increase UV resistance. Octinoxate is therefore added to plastic products such as eyeglasses, food packaging and automotive parts.
