Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)
Sorbitan Laurate, also known as Sorbitan Laurate or [2-(3,4-dihydroxyoxolan-2-yl)-2-hydroxyethyl] dodecanoate, is a chemical widely used in the cosmetic industry. It is an emulsifier produced by the reaction of lauric acid and sorbitol. This chemical preparation is then reduced to form a complex ester that acts as a non-ionic surfactant.
Although often used in industrial production, Sorbitan Laurate is also frequently used in many consumer products. In the cosmetics industry, it is mainly used in skin and hair care products, makeup, moisturizers, deodorants, as well as shower and shaving soaps. Its action helps to smooth and soften the skin. In addition, it is also used as a humectant in some baked products. In less common cases, the substance can be found in some pharmaceutical products. Although this substance has the potential to cause skin and eye irritation, when used in appropriate concentrations, it is considered safe for both consumers and the environment.
